CLASSES

The school opens every Sunday during school term time from 10 am to 1.30 pm. Our classes are held in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire at Moldgreen Community Primary School.

Students are seperated into three classes, Juniors, Intermediates & Seniors, dependent on age and ablity.

All students particiapte in one hour of:

  • Dance - including musical theatre, street, jazz, ballet & contemporary.
  • Drama - various workshops covering different theatre genres, scripted work, TV & improvisation.
  • Singing - vocal training in a range of different styles, including pop, rock, soul, blues, jazz, musical theatre & clasical.

DANCE CLASSES:
We strongly believe that our students should be versatile dancers and that they should be challenged with a varied range of dance styles. Therefore we change the style from week to week to include:

  • Jazz Dance - Jazz covers many fundamental aspects of dance, dealing with dynamics, contrast, body alignment, flexability and timing. Jazz pushes the dancers body to it's limit, taking solid technique and using it in a different way. The style is mostly seen in theatre, musicals, cruises and tv.
  • Ballet Dance - Ballet is the core of dance, this strong technique is the base of jazz, and contemporary dance. The technique deals with posture, core stability, placement, body awareness, body strenghening and flexibility.
  • Contemporary Dance - this art form covers all of the elements of Jazz and Ballet, however this is a more free and expressive style.
  • Street Dance - This is a very popular dance form, where music is used to influence the movement to create different interpretations. Many other dance forms are made from set steps, whereas Steet is more original and steps are pucreated from a feeling or impulse. This style fuses many different forms such as Jazz, Latin, Tap, Hip-Hop, Contemporary and even Ballet. The dance is used mainly on TV to commercial music.
  • Pas de deux - Partnering and lifting is an important part of our programme at Heavy Arts as we feel that it is a challenge both for our boys, who gain strength and skill through partnering, but also a vital technique for our girls to learn as they have to use their own strength and control their own weight when being lifted.

DRAMA CLASSES:
Within Heavy Arts Drama lessons students cover a wide range of topics to improve skill, knowledge and understanding of this discipline as well as improving confidence, communication skills and self esteem. All lessons are taught in an exciting and engaging way encouraging students to have fun with their work. Topics covered include:

  • Scripted work - a wide variety of playwrights and scripts are explored and performed to encourage and enhance awareness of plays from a range of eras, styles and cultural backgrounds.
  • Devised work - improvisation is vital to improve acting skills and is incorporated into most lessons. This may include performance from stimulus, story telling and theatre, devising from scripted work, and characterisation workshops.
  • Styles of theatre - All students will be introduced to a range of theatre styles including naturalism, physical theatre and mime and mask. Students will also look at world theatre which may include Kabuki Theatre, Commedia dell'arte and African ritual theatre.
  • Practitioners - Older students will be introduced to a range of practitioners including Stanislavsky, Brecht, Boal and Artaud.
  • Acting skills - within all workshops students will be encouraged and guided to improve their stage presence, acting for stage and screen, characterisation, building tension, directing skills, movement and voice.
  • Games and warm ups - All students will take part in warm up exercises which is essential for creating a collaborative creative environment.

SINGING CLASSES:
At Heavy Arts we like to give an overview of music alongside a more in depth and professional look at Musical Theatre as a specific genre.

We incorporate ethnomusicology, rhythm, tempo, timbre, performance techniques, solo and group exercises and vocal technique, to name but a few topics.
